3. History
Fact - Kartik Swami is the only temple in North India dedicated to Lord Krtikaye.
The temple has many legends associated with it, but the most prominent one revolves around the story of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati’s two sons—Lord Kartikeya and Lord Ganesha.
One day, both brothers were given a challenge: they had to circle the entire universe seven times. Kartikeya, being the elder and full of energy, set off immediately on his majestic peacock to fly around the universe. Meanwhile, Ganesha, the thoughtful one, came up with a different idea. Instead of circling the entire universe, which would take time, he simply walked around his parents, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
Why? Because, for Ganesha, his parents were his whole world. Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati were deeply touched by this gesture and declared Ganesha the winner.
When Kartikeya returns after completing his journey around the universe, he is furious to see Ganesha crowned as the victor. In his anger and disappointment, he left his parents and Kailash.
Here’s where the story takes different paths. Some say Kartikeya arrived at Kronch Parvat (where Kartik Swami Temple now stands in Rudraprayag), while others believe he went to Srisailam in Southern India, where he is revered as Skanda or Lord Muruga. Another legend suggests that Kartikeya, in his anger, left his physical form on Kronch Parvat—now known as Kartik Swami in Rudraprayag.
In short, Lord Kartikeya was both furious and heartbroken after losing the challenge to his brother, Lord Ganesha, and decided to leave his home and family. He chose to live far from them, and it is believed that he settled here at Kartik Swami.
